Brief: Produce an episode with a Kpop theme for the WEBTOON YT series “Scrollworthy”

 

Overview

As the lead on this project, I concepted, wrote, filmed, acted in, and directed this episode for the Scrollworthy series on WEBTOON’s Youtube channel which currently has the highest number of organic views of any Scrollworthy episode to date.

Concepting

The Scrollworthy series introduces viewers to interesting WEBTOON series using a playful premise. Our social team initially requested an episode highlighting K-pop WEBTOON series, but after evaluating past Scrollworthy episode performance and the social team’s overall objective to gain as many views as possible, I proposed promoting our platform’s most popular series within a Kpop themed premise. Therefore we can get more views from the fandoms of these popular series combined with Kpop fans.

I proposed a fake Kpop reality show since parody style videos perform well with our audiences. For an extra creative touch, I added fake commercials to add to the absurdity and keep audiences intrigued.

Process

We managed to cutdown production from 1.5 months to 1 month. Within that timeline I constructed a production calendar, setting deadlines for production checkpoints. I also made a shot list for all the animations to track progress and enable easy re-assignment based on bandwidth.

  • Social Team and I finalized the video concept

  • Wrote the first draft script

  • Script was reviewed by the ACD and Legal team, then revised and finalized

  • Kicked off with the Motion Designer so they could begin collecting assets and making initial designs

  • Shot all the footage myself while being on camera talent

  • I built the animatic from selected footage, then processed, color corrected, and cleaned audio

  • Requested Voice Over from colleagues

  • Revised and approved designs from the Motion Designer

  • Shared animatic with Motion Designer so they could begin animating

  • Assisted with animations

  • Delivered first pass and revisions to stakeholders

    • We selected 5 of our most popular series with prominent rivalries to incite comments from fans

    • By facing them off 1-on-1, we could slip in exposition from their WEBTOON series and encourage viewers to start reading

  • Commercials

    • I took 3 popular manhwa tropes and created fake products around them

      • Isekai Insurance - Isekai is a popular action manhwa genre, and people love bad insurance commercials

      • Cinnamon Rolls - Kind, cute male leads are referred to by fans a “cinnamon rolls”, and people love food commercials

      • Sovieshu’s Album - Sovieshu is a reviled toxic male on our platform, so making him a bad rapper seemed like the most hilarious and cringe-y thing we could do
